Tournament information:

The Amsterdam Sevens Rugby tournament has been running since 1972 when the first tournament was organized by AAC Rugby Club. It has now established itself as one of the biggest tournaments’ on the rugby calendar attracting teams from around the globe.

All standards of teams take part from National teams to club sides and social sides making this an extremely enjoyable experience for all the spectators and competitors involved. The tournament takes place over the course of two days. Saturday is used to sort the wheat from the chaff. Teams will play in a mini league to determine which tournament they will compete in on the Sunday. On Sunday the men’s tournament will split into 3 levels, the ladies tournament will split into 2 and there is also a veteran’s tournament. The teams are continually knocked-out until the finals are reached on the Sunday.

Location:

Amsterdam has grown out of marshland and its first inhabitants arrived around 1000. I t became a city around 1300 which was around the time that the dam was constructed on the River Amstel which is where the current Dam Square is. The golden age between 1570 and 1700 spawned most of the classic buildings and canals that are spread around the city. It was during this period that Amsterdam became one of the richest cities in the world and the population of the city grew from 30000 to 200000.

Amsterdam itself is renowned for its vibrancy and nightlife. There are several bars and clubs that have partnerships with the tournaments organizer to offer special offers and cheap entry etc. These include Café Corso, Mollie Malones, Susies saloon, Dan Murphy’s, Café Heuvel and Coco’s Outback. Other areas worth a visit if you want a bit of culture and history are the Jordaan, the 9 streets (9 strtaten), Rembrandtsplein and Utrechterstraat, Nieuwenmarkt and Spiegelstraat where there are lots of small bars and restaurants.

There are many historic buildings and museums to visit if there are any spare moments during your trip from the famous museums such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum (Modern Art) to the Torture Museum and the Hash Museum.

Accommodation can be provided in a variety of establishments depending on the teams preference and budget. There are a huge variety of hostels, hotels, B & B’s etc available in and around Amsterdam.
